Do you know what mediation is?

At the risk of starting out too simply, I will start out too simply.  I wonder how many people actually know what mediation is?  So, as a threshold question, in under 250 words – tell me what you think mediation is and how it works!  Feel free to share your experiences with it if you have any.

Oh. I thought you wrote meditation. Nevermind.
But as long as I’ve come this far, mediation is getting a third party involved to help settle a dispute.
    Meditate on that.

Thanks Janet. I posted the question because we are trying to move my law practice toward a mediation practice. One of the things that we are looking at is how to connect with people directly, rather than go through other attorneys, exclusively, for referrals. We considered various advertising media, but I kind of backed up and started to question whether advertising on television and radio would prompt people to call about their conflicts and consider mediation as an alternative. My concern is that the education curve on why mediation is better than litigation would be too high for a mass media approach and the number of call ins would not justify the expense.
